Harvest 2019 with the Tohi Team
A lot of time and consideration is taken into providing premium products with your health and wellness top of mind. For Tohi, it all starts with the Aronia Berry in the fields of the Midwest. We work directly with Aronia growers to provide the highest quality berries available. Our relationship with them is very important to us as we work in collaboration to raise awareness of the berry and its amazing health benefits.
The Aronia Berry harvest happens once a year around the end of August leading into early September. This year, the Tohi team traveled to meet the growers and experience harvest firsthand. We were excited to witness the handwork and dedication that goes into growing the antioxidant-rich super berries that are the core ingredient in all Tohi beverages. As a team, it was important for us to see the creation of Tohi from field to can. We hope the video and photos below give you a glimpse of the magic of harvest, the appreciation we have for the growers and our love of #allthingsaronia!
The Amazing Aronia Berry
Aronia Berries are native to North America and have been used for hundreds of years by Native Americans for their nutritional value. The small, purple super berries grow on bushes for three years before they are ready to be harvested. Depending on the quantity of berries, you can pick them by hand or use machinery. You’ll know the berries are ready to be harvested if they have no hints of red coloring. Aronia Berries should be a deep dark purple when they are ready for consumption.
The berry grows in most soil conditions and is known to withstand both cold winters and hot summers. It’s also extremely pest and disease resistant. A typical bush can grow to six feet or taller and a fully developed bush can produce up to 38 pounds of berries! In late spring, the bush blooms with beautiful cream blossoms and then dark green leaves cover it in the summer.
Small but mighty, Aronia Berries have the highest antioxidant level of all the super berries. They have 4x as many antioxidants as blueberries and 2x as many as acai. Studies show antioxidants positively benefit the brain, heart, bone and immune system. If you’re looking for an incredible source of antioxidants, look no further!
